Have you ever woken up feeling a bit down? You don't know why, but can’t seem to escape that nagging feeling? Well, I've been like that this week. I’m typing this out as I try out different ways to get out of the low zone this morning.

Here are the baby steps I’m going to take to shift my mood in a more positive direction before I even think about investigating the wonders of my low mood:

  1. Communicate with loved ones - It’s only fair they’re aware of where I am today so that I can manage their expectations and create space and safe boundaries for me so I don’t overstretch or say something I may regret. I think this type of communication always needs to come from a loving place reflecting consideration of yourself and the loved ones you're messaging.

  2. Move! - I don’t like just sitting in my low moment, I always feel the need to move around otherwise I risk sinking into a deeper hole of self-pity. I assess my surroundings to identify tasks around my apartment. I clean - even if it’s already been cleaned, I re-organize things, ensure it’s not too hot and I open the windows to let some fresh air in.

  3. Exercise - I have always turned to exercise to help me reach a specific fitness goal, or just to increase my endorphin levels.

  4. Cold (or not so hot) Shower - this wakes me up and leaves me feeling fresh and focused. A warmer/hot shower or bath is better reserved for the eve before I head to a relaxing slumber.

  5. Eat healthily and keep hydrated - food and drink definitely can have an impact on your mood and waking up feeling low the last thing I need is something heavy. So, I have oats, and berries with oat milk, and today, I'll focus on staying hydrated with plenty of water and green tea.

  6. Plan for the day/week ahead - this gives me a sense of control and awareness. Something I have learned about myself is that I don’t do well when caught off guard or put on the spot. go through work emails, personal emails, and bills. I check outstanding items, prioritize what I need to action throughout the week, and then, I am left with the feeling of control and an ‘I got this’ attitude."

  7. Music - listening to relaxing music gently shifts my mood and helps draw a smile across my face, leaving me feeling peaceful.
